Exhibit on New York's Garment District Pops Up on Broadway

The new installation, conceived by the Skyscraper Museum, runs through Oct. 31 in a temporary space in the heart of the neighborhood.

POP-UP HISTORY: The latest museum to pay homage to the history of New York’s Garment District is a pop-up exhibition in the heart of the neighborhood. “Urban Fabric: Building New York’s Garment District” opened Monday at 1411 Broadway in a temporary space under the auspices of the Skyscraper Museum, which has its permanent home at 39 Battery Place in lower Manhattan and focuses on the city’s architectural heritage, and the historical forces and individuals that have shaped its successive skylines.

The new installation, in what is being called the Skyscraper Museum in the Garment District, runs through Oct. 31 and looks at the architecture and urban history of the Garment Center, reprising the exhibition the Skyscraper Museum originated last year in its lower Manhattan gallery. Once home to the largest concentration of skyscraper factories in the world and more than 100,000 manufacturing jobs, the historic Garment District has changed dramatically in the past 50 years, but remains one of the city’s most authentic neighborhoods, the museum notes in its description of the exhibition. It adds that the Art Deco district contains more than 125 stepped-back “loft” buildings that took the pyramidal forms dictated by the city’s then-new zoning law.

The guest curator for the free exhibition is Andrew S. Dolkart, a professor of Historic Preservation at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.
