SHIFTING SITES: IMG and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week are facing another change of venue, this time in Berlin.
The city’s cultural commission has placed a ban on “commercial events of all sorts” on Bebelplatz as of January 2011, noting the site’s memorial by Israeli artist Micha Ullman to the Nazi book burning there in May 1933. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin has been held on Bebelplatz for the last five seasons, as have other more commercial events. However, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin is not due to move before July. The January edition will again be held on Bebelplatz, while the search continues for an alternative site. IMG said “we completely respect the cultural commission’s decision. After the January 2011 event, for which Bebelplatz has already been approved by the district, we plan to move to another venue, which we will announce at a later date.”
