FOR THE EAST: Upper Eastside art collectors descended upon the Chinese Porcelain Company gallery on Park Avenue on Wednesday night to toast the latest art book du jour: Phaidon’s "The Chinese Art Book." The tome is a comprehensive glossary of Chinese art, from painting and calligraphy to ceramics and photography, spanning from the earliest dynasties to today.
“The book is really encyclopedic — from ancient bronzes to contemporary,” said Debra Black, who co-hosted the cocktail along with husband Leon. “It’s not done in chronological order but rather kind of mixing by aesthetic. I mean it’s a real mélange and we’re hoping it will be become a classic.” Guests such as Agnes Gund, Bob Colacello and Anne Bass swilled Champagne and walked through the gallery, displaying Asian fine art. “I happen to like the pottery and the porcelain most. Those are my personal favorites but we actually collect some of the contemporary Chinese pieces,” Black continued. “Some of it is quite brilliant.”
