Satu Maaranen Collaborates With Petit Bateau on Capsule

The Finnish designer, who won the Première Vision Grand Prize at Hyères, has designed a collection of nine items for children and women.

PETIT POWER: Marking the first fruits of its collaboration with the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography, French children’s wear brand Petit Bateau is launching a collection designed by Satu Maaranen. The Finnish designer, who won the Première Vision Grand Prize at the last edition of the French festival, has designed a capsule collection of nine items for children and women that will go on sale in 280 Petit Bateau stores and a selection of specialty retailers worldwide on April 29.

To be unveiled at this year’s Hyères festival from April 25 to 28, the range features prints of hand-painted stripe patterns juxtaposed with Petit Bateau’s trademark striped knits. Prices range from 25 euros, or $34 at current exchange, for a children’s T-shirt to 125 euros, or $170, for a women’s dress.

“I wanted to take that iconic Petit Bateau marine stripe, which is a very small, tiny stripe, and then to do a new version of that, painting the stripes in a wavy feeling like I did in my previous own collection,” said Maaranen, adding her visual references were red-and-white candy canes and three-color striped toothpaste.

Patrick Pergament, chief executive officer of Petit Bateau, said his team had instantly fallen for the hand-painted dégradé blue dresses Maaranen showed in Hyères last year, and were content with her take on its iconic striped jersey. “It’s fun and irreverent, and I think it’s great to play with our codes and have them revisited by people who have a fresh, new, different approach to what we do,” he said.

Maaranen, who is a freelance designer of women’s wear and prints for brands including Finland’s Marimekko, said she hoped the collaboration would put her in touch with buyers as she plots the next step in her fashion career.
