BEAM ME UP LELA: Zoë Saldaña isn’t fluent in Swahili, but she still managed to land the role of “Uhura” in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” movie due out next year. She was very much out of character Sunday in a blue ruffle-neck Lela Rose dress at the designer’s show. Many scoff at Trekkies still devoted to the sci-fi series, but the series carried some weight. In the sci-fi show, the original Uhura, Nichelle Nichols, planned to call it quits early on, but Martin Luther King Jr. was said to have convinced her to carry on her unofficial duties as a role model. Saldaña’s other 2009 cinematic pursuits include a role in James Cameron’s “Avatar,” the first film to feature photo-realistic characters, which actually look real.
