PAS DE DEUX: Benjamin Millepied is walking in the footsteps of the illustrious George Balanchine by creating a ballet in collaboration with Place Vendôme jeweler and watch maker Van Cleef & Arpels.
The dancer and choreographer, who is married to actress Natalie Portman, will stage “Reflections” with his collective, L.A Dance Project, from May 23 to 25 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Van Cleef & Arpels said Wednesday.
Artist Barbara Kruger will design sets and costumes, with composer David Lang in charge of music.
The house has long-standing links to the world of ballet, symbolized by its Ballerina brooches, first launched in the Forties. In 1967, Balanchine created “Jewels,” a ballet inspired by emeralds, rubies and diamonds, after meeting with Claude Arpels.
That ballet was last performed in 2012 to celebrate the reopening of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Last month Van Cleef & Arpels unveiled the Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée watch, featuring a ballerina whose tutu moves like wings, at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva.
