PEOPLE’S CHOICE: Derek Lam is giving the power to the people. The designer unveiled his first crowdsourced collection, done in collaboration with eBay, on Wednesday morning at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. Sixteen looks were shown, with each revolving around iconic dress silhouettes — from a simple shift and denim shirtdress (the latter with a kicky peplum in the back) to boho printed frocks and cotton poplin evening gowns, priced from $125 to $295. Come May, however, only five pieces will make it to eBay’s virtual sales floor, depending on which ones rack up the most online votes.
“I want this to be fun and interactive and do something out of the box,” said Lam, nudging editors to cast their ballots on the computer screens nearby. Votes can be placed on Dereklam.ebay.com (which will continually update the dress rankings) until Feb. 28. Results will be revealed on March 1.
