Parsons Cancels John Galliano Master Class

The designer was set to teach a three-day master class, but the school’s decision to invite the designer backfired, resulting in public outrage.

NOT SO FAST, PARSONS: The fashion rehabilitation of John Galliano is not going quite as smoothly as some had hoped for. Galliano was set to teach a three-day master class at Parsons The New School for Design this spring, but the school’s decision to invite the designer backfired, resulting in public outrage, and it now has called off the class. Galliano was dismissed from his job at Christian Dior after an anti-Semitic outburst in a Paris bar. The school’s statement downplayed that the public reaction had anything to do with the cancellation. “An important element of the planned workshop with John Galliano was a candid conversation about the connection between his professional work and his actions in the world at large,” it stated. “Unfortunately, we could not reach consensus with Mr. Galliano on the conditions of this conversation, and the program could not move forward.”

Earlier this year, there had been some speculation that Galliano was taking up another teaching job at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, his alma mater. The college denied that this would be the case.
