Monocle Inks Deal With Nikkei Inc.

The Japanese media corporation will become a minority shareholder in the London-based magazine.

NIKKEI’S MONOCLE DEAL: Monocle, the London-based magazine founded by Tyler Brûlé in 2007, has signed a deal with Nikkei Inc. under which the Japanese media corporation will become a minority shareholder in Monocle, and the two companies will share international newsstand and subscription intelligence, Monocle said, alongside building on commercial relationships across editorial, advertising sales and distribution.

While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, it values Monocle at $115 million, a spokeswoman for the publication said. Monocle said that the partnership would allow Monocle and Nikkei’s 2013 English language launch, Nikkei Asian Review, which focuses on the economy and business from an Asian perspective, “to grow their global presence even further.”

Monocle now incorporates print media, a radio station and online films, shops, e-commerce and books. Nikkei’s business includes its newspaper, which has a daily circulation of three million, more than 40 magazines, television channels, radio, books, database services, conferences and online news platforms.
