Lou Doillon

At his Herve Leger show Sunday afternoon, designer Max Azria got his gaggle of devoted bold names like Joy Bryant, Melissa George and Zoe Saldana who gamely donned those figure-hugging bandage dresses way before cocktail hour. But there were some new faces in the front row, too. Maria Sharapova was making her first appearance of this fashion week.

"It never fits into my schedule. Usually I'm playing in the U.S. Open, so I finally got the chance," explained the tennis star, who skipped the tournament this year due to an injury. Sharapova will also be attending the Peter Som show, but revealed she has a more top secret reason for being out and about this week.

"I'm doing a launch event tomorrow [Monday] for something I can't announce now," she said coyly.

A few seats down was another Herve Leger newbie, Lou Doillon. "I'm so used to being a tomboy. Wearing these dresses it's the first time I feel like a real woman without being cutesy," she said of her recent sartorial conversion.

Doillon's fashion calendar is still up in the air, thanks to her upcoming rehearsals for a play she is doing, Samuel Beckett's "The Image," as part of Crossing the Line: the French Institute Alliance Française's Fall Festival.

"I thought I'd start with a bit of fun," she smiled.
