Damien Hirst Launches Other Criteria

The retail arm of the art and publishing venture opens today at 458 Broome Street store in New York’s SoHo.

NEW CRITERIA: Among the inventory at Other Criteria, the retail arm of Damien Hirst’s art and publishing venture, opening today at 458 Broome Street store in New York’s SoHo, are a new silk-screen print of Hirst’s interpretation of Mickey Mouse, an exclusive jewelry collaboration with Los Angeles-based fine jewelry brand Hoorsenbuhs and self-portraits by Tim Noble and Sue Webster, titled “Black Bottoms,” wherein the artists “basically ink their a--holes and sit on the paper,” said Jason Beard, creative director of the company, during a walk-through of the store Monday. “So something for everyone.”

The Broome Street store marks Other Criteria’s first overseas expansion — the company has three other stores, two in London and one in Devon, England, close to Hirst’s home. The 3,000-square-foot space in SoHo carries original prints from the 35 to 40 artists the company works with, as well as editions, books and artist-designed decorative objects, such as rugs, wallpaper and vases. Cofounded by Hirst in 2005, Other Criteria has collaborated with artists including Ashley Bickerton, Polly Borland, Gary Hume and Sarah Lucas.
