Down in Austin, where (as far as I know) the sun usually shines, clouds of sadness loomed over the city following the tragedy early Thursday near the Mohawk nightclub, where people were killed and injured by a car that plowed through a street that had been blocked off for South by Southwest.
As often happens with such calamity, people came together in unwritten acts of sympathy and desperation. Festivalgoers exhibited more kindness. Musicians played with more heart. Song dedications and moments of silence appeared everywhere, and people of all ages and race suddenly felt more connected when taking in newer, younger sounds like Foster the People, The Black Lips and Austin's band of the year, Riders Against the Storm, as well as older local classics like Jimmie Vaughan.
