MOTHER LOAD: This weekend, when German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung launches the first fashion-themed issue of its magazine Frankfurter Allgemeine Magazin, it will feature a sketch by Karl Lagerfeld that is sure to get people talking.

The publication asked the designer to weigh in on German-French relationships, given the 50th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, or Treaty of Friendship, for reconciliation between the two countries.

The sketch shows a lesbian couple, a wink to the twin brides that walked out hand-in-hand at the end of the last Chanel couture show, and the hot-button issue of gay parenthood. The children of this couple are François Hollande and Angela Merkel, shown clinging to — and hiding behind — their mothers, depicted as symbols of France and Germany.

The Magazin will come out eight times a year.
