WHAT'S IN THE GARAGE: In advance of the 2015 planned opening of a building being designed by Rem Koolhaas with OMA, Moscow’s Garage Center for Contemporary Culture is changing its name to the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art as of May 1.
Founded in 2008 by Dasha Zhukova, Garage is a privately-funded, publicly-driven institution that aims to braoden public access to contemporary art and ideas in Russia. Garage Museum of Contemporary Art will be focused to provide a meeting place for people, to appreciate art and generate ideas. The new museum will be housed in the 1960s Vremena Goda (Seasons of the Year) pavilion, a prefabricated concrete structure that has been vacant for 20-plus years in Gorky Park. OMA’s design includes substantial exhibition galleries, a mediateque for access to the Archive Collection, a creative center for children, a screening room, and an auditorium, as well as a bookshop and café.
Zhukova said she thought it was "of great importance to take on a name that best articulated our mission, both to Moscow and abroad."
