MISSONI PILOT: The pilot of the small plane that vanished Jan. 4 near Venezuela’s Los Roques archipelago with Vittorio Missoni, the chief executive officer of Italian fashion house Missoni, and five others on board had an expired psychological-physical fitness certificate, and the company that owns the aircraft didn’t have a license to operate an airline, Italy’s air safety agency said Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Jorge Galindo, the spokesman at Venezuela’s interior ministry, declined to comment on reports the pilot’s medical certificate expired on Nov. 30. A spokesman at Venezuela’s civil aviation institute, who couldn’t be named because of internal policy, declined to comment on the pilot’s certificate and on reports that Transaéreo 5074, C.A., the company that owns the BN-2 Islander plane, didn’t have the certificate required to operate as a small airline. The company couldn’t be immediately contacted. Asdrubal Bermudez, president and owner of Transaereo 5074, admitted to the Associated Press last week that the company hadn’t yet received the certification but that the aircraft met all safety requirements.
