MISS AMERICA SKIPPING CLASS: As the newly crowned Miss America, Mallory Hagan won’t be back on campus at the Fashion Institute of Technology until her reign is over. The Brooklynite said Monday she will be soon putting her belongings in storage for what will no doubt be a whirlwind year. Once she is back to hitting the books, the 23-year-old said she will need to finish getting a degree in advertising, marketing and communications. Hagan expects to put some of the know-how she learned about cosmetics and fragrance, her first pursuit at FIT, as an Amway Artistry spokeswoman. Amway, like Joseph Ribkoff, the Canadian label Hagan will wear for all of her Miss America appearances, sponsored this year’s pageant. (That is also the case with Catalina swimwear.)
Only a few days into wearing the tiara, Hagan was old hat about her talking points during a phone interview Monday. Occasionally pausing midsentence to consult with her handlers “Miss Sharon and Miss Karen,” the Opelika, Ala. native declined to name any favorite designers or labels. “I will keep that to myself for now. When I’m done being Miss America, I will tell you a myriad of names.” (She did mention Forever 21, Zara and H&M as favorite stores.)
As for whether it was difficult to reconcile the fact that Miss America will only be wearing Canadian made clothes, Hagan said, “It shouldn’t matter where the clothing comes from,” since her Miss America mission is more about broadening education and empowering women. The fact that Joseph Ribkoff is a Canadian company should help to expand Miss America’s international reach.
