MILAN NOIR: Christmas will be black in Milan this year — cost-cutting measures will trim both the municipality and private entrepreneurs’ budgets for Christmas lights. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele will shine thanks to Prada, however, which will pay for the decorative lights in the 19th-century arcade hosting the brand’s biggest store in town. The rest of the city’s 13 districts will have to share the 91,000 euros, or $118,000 at current exchange rate, allocated by Milan’s municipality. An additional 18,000 euros, or $23,346, will be destined for the central Piazza Diaz and Piazza San Babila, which are not part of any district.
Hurt by increased fiscal pressure, for the first time in years retailers and restaurant owners in the Naviglio area won’t be able to finance their own Christmas decorations and lights but will benefit from public funds.
