MIELE TAKES MIAMI: Miami solidified its slot as little Brazil Wednesday night when Carlos Miele showed his fall collection at Miami Fashion Week, which awarded him international designer of the year. The designer, who splits his time between Brazil and New York, said Miami has been more on his radar lately, to the point he’s considering buying a home.
“Both my brothers bought properties here, so my parents are always visiting. Since we’re tight, guess I’m next,” said Miele, who plans to take another crack at the city’s retail boom, whether Bal Harbour or the Miami Design District, after a franchise in Coral Gables shuttered a couple years ago. “It’s definitely my second market to open after New York, when the company’s IPO happens in 2014.”
After showing at New York Fashion Week for a decade, Miele surprised the industry by taking a season off. He said the Internet’s speed of information made it impossible to present the same collection twice. In the meantime, buyers have been making do with visiting his showrooms. Themed “Walking the Line,” its 35 looks borrow from his homeland’s fantastical landscapes and architecture. Black and white are most pronounced in pieces like a sequined tuxedo jacket and striped maxidress with geometric lace.
