PLANTING THE SEED OF FASHION: Admitting she “wasn’t really a gardener” before coming to the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama planted her garden Wednesday in black pencil pants and a black knit sweater set. At first glance, some observers thought she had a pair of bright pink gardening gloves tucked into her back waistband. In fact, her Clu-designed sweater featured a four-tiered Schiaparelli pink back ruffle inset. The South Lawn garden patch also boasted a few surprises of its own, with the addition of four new crops — bok choy, artichokes, white and cheddar cauliflower and white and purple kohlrabi. Chef Sam Kass got a ribbing as soon as the First Lady arrived. Seated around four picnic tables topped with big baskets of apples were two busloads of school kids, none of whom were eating apples. “What are you doing, Sam?’’ she exclaimed, calling on the kids to eat healthily.

So what healthy fare did the boyishly charming White House chef serve up for French Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the night before, just a few hours after they sampled half-smoke hot dogs for lunch at Ben’s Chili bowl? “It was a private dinner. I can’t say,” he said, smiling sheepishly before taking a big bite from his apple.
