BASTIAN GOES BOFFO: The third edition of BOFFO Building Fashion will kick off this fall with a temporary retail store for men’s designer Michael Bastian. The program, which was conceived in 2010 by BOFFOfounder Faris Al-Shathir, brings young architects together with independentdesigners to collaborate on retail spaces. An online competition for architects to submit design ideas for the Bastian shop launches Friday on, an architecture news and social media portal.

The winning architect, as chosen by Bastian with input from a panel of experts, will design the exteriors and interiors of two combinedshipping containers, situated on Pier 57 in New York. The 640-square-foot store will open for three weeks in November, offering Bastian’s Gothic-inspired fall collection and special runway items not available at other retailers. Pop-up shops for an accessories designer and a women’s wear designer, who will be announced at a later date, will follow the Bastian shop.

Previous participants in the BOFFO Building Fashion series include Richard Chai, Nicola Formichetti, Patrik Ervell, Simon Spurr and Ohne Titel, among others. Bastian is aiming to open a permanent retail store and is in early discussions with potential investors to help finance that initiative.
