FUR MATTERS: The fur fight is not over in West Hollywood, Calif. Mayfair House, a clothing and accessories store in the city, where a ban on the sale of fur merchandise went into effect on Sept. 21, filed a federal lawsuit Thursday seeking to have the ban lifted and declared unconstitutional. “The ordinance is an ill-considered and illegal law that is harmful to the city, its consumer citizens and business residents. It was passed by city councilmen who have the political support of national animal rights activist groups who wish to impose their will over others,” said Johanna Judah, owner of Mayfair House. She added, “I am deeply concerned about the impact this ban will have on our city and its ability to attract and retain businesses that add to the image of our city.” The Fur Information Council of America supports Mayfair House’s lawsuit. Keith Kaplan, executive director of FICA, said, “We too are committed to the overturning of the ordinance and will support any and all efforts by injured parties.” According to Mayfair House, the city of West Hollywood will have 21 days to file its response to the lawsuit.
