Marks & Spencer Launches Shwop Pop-up

The retailer's Schwopping initiative, in partnership with Oxfam, encourages men and women to donate a piece of clothing every time they buy something new.

THIS OLD THING?: “I’ve been trying to work out why shopping at charity shops is such fun, and it’s because you would never get this mix anywhere else. These Marni trousers next to that vintage jumper,” said Joanna Lumley on Thursday morning at the launch of Marks & Spencer’s Shwop pop-up shop at the retailer’s Marble Arch store.

Schwopping is an initiative from M&S, in partnership with the charity Oxfam. It encourages men and women to donate a piece of clothing every time they buy something new from the retailer. All proceeds go to Oxfam, supports communities in developing countries.

The actress and model — famous for her role as Patsy Stone in “Absolutely Fabulous” — had parted with a reversible Moschino jacket as part of the initiative.

The two-day pop-up is selling a selection of clothes donated by other famous faces: Ellie Goulding has given a beaded and sequined bodysuit and Zara Martin has thrown in a Maison Martin Margiela for H&M bodysuit.

There’s a Hugo Boss dinner jacket from Gary Barlow and a Marni blouse from Brix Smith-Start, the East London retailer who curated the space.

Lumley said she finds parting with her wardrobe increasingly easy. “All I can think about is that someone else is going to get it and love it. And it’s not going to go to landfill — that’s the main thing. Because the earth is being stifled by what we chuck away.”
