MARK + JAMES BAG IT: Before they get to New York Fashion Week, Mark Badgley and James Mischka have one other order of business to attend to: their Mark + James handbag debut. The duo launched the contemporary line with clothes in 2009, then added shoes for spring 2011. Bags, which hit for fall, were the next logical step. “Mark + James has become such a strong business that we really wanted to complement the collection,” says Badgley.
Licensed under Franchi Handbags, which also produces Badgley Mischka’s Collection and Couture lines, Mark + James features about 35 styles, retailing from $150 to $300. The pieces are meant to keep the sophistication of more expensive and classic Badgley Mischka line, but with a more casual, distressed look, i.e. wool and waxed canvas messengers in Navajo prints, as well as a variety of pieces in fake fur, leather and satin.
