EASY RIDER: Marcelo Burlon’s runway debut at Pitti Uomo in Florence Thursday night started with a dynamic motocross show. The bold stunts proved the perfect backdrop for the Argentine designer’s masculine and athletic lineup. Burlon sent out a gang of bikers and skaters on the runway, which was set around a giant motocross ramp. “My father was a racing director — he was the guy waving the flag,” the designer explained post-show. “Every Sunday he used to take me to all kinds of races — car and motocross — so I grew up with this kind of aesthetic, I just never thought that it would impact me in this way.”
The dark and moody collection, mostly in black and white, borrowed heavily from street culture and contact sports. Hooded sweaters, tank tops, T-shirts, Bermudas and biker pants were at times enhanced with the protective gear of American football players and stuntmen.
The line-up also premiered the designer’s new sneaker line, which he said arrived at the show by taxi. “They travelled 500 kilometers; they were so late,” laughed Burlon who is ready to launch a kids’ line at Pitti Bimbo next week. His collection of sunglasses in partnership with Marcolin is slated for fall.
