Mahiki Bans Fur

London nightclub favored by young royals teams with PETA.

NO FUR, WE'RE BRITISH: London nightclub Mahiki has teamed with PETA to ban fur at its Mayfair establishment. Starting Thursday, a neon "No fur" sign will adorn the entrance to the Mayfair  club, and patrons wearing fur will be turned away at the door. "We are expecting a great turnout tomorrow night for the celebration of Mahiki's new fur-free policy, and we hope that other clubs follow Mahiki's positive example by going fur-free as well," said Mimi Bekhechi, a PETA spokeswoman. Mahiki, whose clientele includes the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, is the first London nightclub to enforce a no-fur policy. Michael Evans, creative director of Mahiki told WWD: "Since we have been around for eight years and have a huge celeb following, I thought it was the natural thing to do, to put the ban in place. I believe some people don't really understand, so teaching them and creating awareness around the issue is what we are trying to do."
