ON THE LIST: The fashion universe and the worlds that orbit it were well represented when the list of victims of Bernard Madoff’s alleged $50 billion Ponzi scheme got the full reveal. Among the more than 13,000 investors catalogued in federal bankruptcy court in Manhattan were Theory president and co-founder Andrew Rosen and Robert K. Futterman, chairman and chief executive officer of retail real estate firm Robert K. Futterman and Associates. Fred Schwartz, better known as “Fred the Furrier,” founder and pitchman of Fur Vault Inc., made the list, as did Ahmet Ertegün, the late co-founder of Atlantic Records. Gallery owner Barbara Gladstone and 77-year-old model Carmen Dell’Orefice joined them. Those allegedly bilked by Madoff can at least take solace in their company. Their names appeared alongside previously reported investors such as Nine West founder Jerome Fisher; Leslie Fay chairman and chief executive officer John Pomerantz; Kay Windsor founder Carl Shapiro; Lee Mellis, former chief financial officer at Puritan Fashion Corp., and Alexandra Penney, former editor in chief of Self. The court filing contained only the names of the institutions and individual investors, and did not disclose possible losses. Most of the list’s newer reveals did not return calls inquiring as to their level of investment, perhaps understandably. Fred Hayman, a former Beverly Hills retailer, invested with Madoff, but would not divulge how much in an interview Thursday. “That’s nobody’s business,” said Hayman, noting a well-meaning friend turned him on to the firm. “I don’t forgive Madoff, but I forgive my friend totally. I think most people went into it with good intentions.” Hayman said house arrest was too good for Madoff. “He should be in prison now instead of on Park Avenue,” he said. “I have no sympathy for him whatsoever.”
