LOVE CHILD: Barry Diller heaped praise on his wife, Diane von Furstenberg, for her generosity at the Worldwide Orphans fund-raising gala on Monday evening at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan, where the designer was honored along with Dr. Sophie Mengistu. “What he said tonight is not what he says to me,” retorted von Furstenberg. “He says to me [that] I am the most narcissistic person in the world and I only think about myself. And I do think about myself because I like myself.”
Narcissist or not, von Furstenberg then deflected the spotlight onto WWO founder Dr. Jane Aronson, noting, “So we all try in our own way to do something. If all of us tried very hard, all of us would never do as much as Jane. Jane has saved 50,000 children. I mean, that is amazing.”
In the appreciative crowd were Elie Tahari — who himself grew up in an orphanage; Ann Curry; David Nelson of the New York Jets (sporting Elie Tahari); skater Sarah Hughes; Veronica Webb, and Chris Del Gatto.
The evening’s host, Seth Meyers of “Saturday Night Live,” said that the soaring venue looked like “the kind of room that the Joker would drop from the ceiling and tell you to put all your jewels on the table. But then Batman would show up — and of course Batman is one of our greatest orphans.”
Amy Poehler, in turn, sent a supportive video lamenting her inability to be there in person due to the restraining order Meyers had against her.
