ON THE FRINGE: Colin McDowell and Christopher Bailey feted 10 years of the Fashion Fringe competition for emerging talent at the London Film Museum in London this week. They paid homage to the designers involved with a digital, interactive showcase in Covent Garden, with looks from each of the winners including Erdem Moralıoğlu, Haizhen Wang, and Corrie Nielsen, on display.
The show launched in 2003, and was created by McDowell in conjunction with IMG Fashion. It is a platform for young design talent that provides the winners with the mentorship to cultivate their brand.
“We desperately need these kinds of platforms in order to support the most extraordinary examples we have in this country,” said Bailey, chairman of the event. “It is not just here in London. It is up and down the country, from the North to the South.”
Guests included Christopher Kane, Natalie Massenet, David Sassoon and Pixie Lott.
“I’ve never come from the platform of Fashion Fringe but my good friend Erdem did,” said Kane. “It’s always good to support young new talent from the beginning to the end.”
Kane, who earlier this week scooped the top honor — women’s wear designer of the year — at the British Fashion Awards, said he’s taking a proper holiday break.
“For Christmas I’m going to Suffolk, to the countryside,” said Kane. “And for New Year’s, I’ll be in London. A house party. Nothing major. I’m tired of traveling. Body clock’s down the sink. I’m back into London time.”
