SPARKLE PLENTY: The philanthropist and socialite Lily Safra is placing her jewelry collection, which includes a hefty chunk of works by JAR, under the hammer at Christie’s Geneva in May.
The auction house said the jewelry is expected to raise more than $20 million, and all proceeds from the 70 lots will be donated to 20 charities.
The charities include the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Paris Opera, the Paris Ballet, the Royal Opera House London and Henry Street Settlement in New York.
Safra amassed the collection over five decades. The 18 JAR jewels, which were made for Safra starting in the Eighties, will have their own special section in the sale, which is set to take place on May 14.
François Curiel, international head of Christie’s jewelry department, described the collection as “Rare … comprising the very best in all styles, periods and makers, from the late 18th century all the way to modern times. It includes also the largest group of creations by JAR ever to be offered at auction.”
The collection will tour the world, with a first stop in London later this month.
