LIBERTY ON TARGET: New Yorkers picked clean the Target + Liberty of London pop-up shop on Sixth Avenue and 42nd Street, forcing it to close Thursday evening, two days earlier than planned. The temporary store, which was unveiled on Wednesday at 11 a.m., was to have remained open through Saturday at 8 p.m. About 6,000 consumers visited the pop-up shop on Wednesday alone, Joshua Thomas, a spokesman said. They snapped up serving trays, handbags, bicycles and long dresses, all with Liberty of London prints. Men’s shirts, boxers and ties completely sold out on the store’s opening day. “The larger items were some of the first to go,” Thomas said. “We doubled the quantity of what we typically bring to a pop-up store in New York. We haven’t seen that [level] of purchase. We were doing crowd control throughout the day.” The store’s success was attributed in part to the high-traffic location across from Bryant Park, the mild weather and the breadth of the collection. “There’s certainly an item for everyone given that it touches nearly every product category in the store,” Thomas said. The space featured more than 12,500 spring flowers, green foliage on walls and digital projections onto larger-than-life-size products. The flowers were donated to the New York Restoration Project and will be used for projects throughout the city, Thomas said. “We never want to disappoint our guests and it’s unfortunate that we had to close early, but the good news is that the Liberty of London collection will be in stores on Sunday.”
