Kyleigh Kühn's Roots of Peace

The international peacemaker's Kabul guest house, where her group’s expat staff lives, was attacked by four or five suicide bombers.

DIGGING IN:  When not modeling, Kyleigh Kühn champions her family’s nonprofit Roots of Peace, which is dedicated to turning Afghan minefields into productive orchards farmland. The international peacemaker e-mailed supporters Tuesday to loop them into the fact that her Kabul guest house, where her group’s expat staff lives (and where she and her family stay during their visits), was attacked by four or five suicide bombers. “Miraculously, none of our staff were even injured,” Kühn wrote. “Sadly, two innocent bystanders were killed - one was a 16-year-old girl. This has been a heartbreaking reminder of the hate and ignorance that can lead to such painful destruction.”

In response, Kühn, who earned a degree from the University of California, Berkeley in peace and conflict studies, has asked devotees to post a photo of a flower or tree with the hashtag #rootsofpeace. “I am choosing to respond with love, light and peace,” the Next model wrote.
