Saint-Etienne Museum to Commemorate Girbauds

The exhibition at the Museum of Art and Industry will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the design duo this fall.

JEAN GENIE: Following its recent renovation, the Museum of Art and Industry in Saint-Etienne, France, is planning a large exhibition to commemorate the 40th anniversary of design duo Marithé and François Girbaud this fall. The event will mark Marithé + François Girbaud’s first-ever exhibition in France. Entitled “L’autre jean” (or “The Other Jean,” in English), the exhibit is to feature a selection of pieces demonstrating the synthesis between creativity and technological innovation. Credited with the creation of the “stonewashed jean” in the Seventies, the Girbauds have long been pioneers in the denim industry. Recently, they have concentrated their efforts on the creation of chemical-free denim treatments.

The exhibit will run from Oct. 26 through May 6, 2013. During that time, it is to contribute pieces to the eighth annual International Design Biennial, a celebration of innovative design hosted by the small southeastern city of Saint-Etienne from March 12 to 31, 2013.
