THE DOCTOR IS IN: Jason Stalvey’s path to fashion has been far from conventional. He set up and runs the division of neurological sleep medicine at Columbia, and has been quietly building a signature accessories label from his downtown apartment. After more than four years of selling a men’s collection of exotic skin goods to private clients, he is selling the line to specialty stores and he has introduced a four-piece women’s collection for fall. Most weekdays he can be found working on his New York-made signature collection from his Wall Street address or in the East 33rd Street factory that makes his goods. On weekends, he works doubletime at Columbia to make sure everything there is in order.
Unable to find an alligator duffle bag that was up to his standards, Stalvey said he decided to make his own and unwittingly that decision spawned a business. “The ones I found weren’t tanned correctly or cut properly, or they were really small,” he explained. In addition to the alligator bags, there are python ones and baseball caps in sheared mink or alligator. “Everything is made and produced in the U.S. A lot of stores like that,” Stalvey said. (Other customers have taken a shining to the 18k gold plated hardware on some of the bags.)
Ironically, his two careers have melded nicely. Asked for the secret to a good night’s sleep, Stalvey said, “Lots of work.”
