BY JACKIE: Seven lots of letters penned by Jackie Kennedy, mostly from the early Sixties, were sold by McInnis Auctions last weekend for a tally of $24,700. The highest bidding — $6,000 — was for a cache that included a 1960 typewritten letter from the incoming first lady to Bergdorf Goodman’s go-to hat designer Marita O’Connor. In that one, Kennedy asked, “Can I sort of use you as my personal shopper there or should I write to someone else?”
That packet also included a memo from Bergdorf’s Leonard Hankin regarding the retailer’s say-nothing-to-the-press policy about the first lady’s fashion choices for the inaugural.
McInnis also auctioned off a pair of worn-out black satin pumps that belonged to Kennedy before she offered them to U.S. Capitol police officer James Boyer for his wife. The size 10 Italian made shoes fetched $2,200. As was the case with the letters, the names of the buyers were not disclosed by McInnis Auctions.
