IMG Nixes Gulnara Karimova Show

The designer is the daughter of Uzbekistan leader Islam Karimov, a known dictator, a fact that had been reported in The New York Post.

COTTON PICKIN' MAD: IMG quietly nixed Gulnara Karimova's fashion show plans but human rights activists are still on the march. Various groups are planning a rally at Lincoln Center Thursday afternoon calling for a ban on Uzbekistan-sourced cotton and the end to forced child labor in the harvesting of cotton there. The designer is the daughter of Uzbekistan leader Islam Karimov, a known dictator.

Representatives from such organizations as the American Federation of Teachers, the International Labor Rights Forum and the Open Society Foundation will be at the two-hour rally.

In addition, the nonprofit Responsible Sourcing Network has been busy lining up 60-plus apparel brands and retailers to pledge they will not source Uzbek cotton harvested through forced child labor.

Karimova could not be reached at presstime. An IMG spokesman's only comment Friday was, "As a result of various concerns raised we have canceled the Guli show on Sept. 15."
