OUT EAST: Hussein Chalayan is traveling through Asia this week. On Saturday, he showed his fall collection in Singapore to cap off the Audi Fashion Festival before heading to Hong Kong and Beijing.
"This is a very fashion conscious area, which is fast-moving and forward thinking, whereas in the West, everything is about living in the past," said Chalayan, who has, among other things, created a skirt that took after a coffee table. "Asia is more about the future."
Chalayan admitted that much of his fall collection is unwearable in tropical climates, like Singapore. "There wasn't time to create anything new so we're simply showing our aesthetic. But definitely, Asia is important for us and I will do more and more for it," the British designer said, adding that materials made from natural or waterproof ingredients that had cooling effects were likely to feature in his upcoming summer pieces. "You can have everything for this climate [in my summer collection] and go through half of winter with it too."
Chalayan also took a moment to comment on the licensing agreement he inked this spring with Pier SpA, the prêt-a-porter producer-distributor. "It's still very new but they're giving us support while respecting our structure," said Chalayan, whose house briefly went through some financial instability in the 2000s. "What's important with this deal is that it creates stability for us. When people know you have a secure producer behind you, they'll order more because they're confident they'll get the delivery."
