HUDSON IN THE BLACK: Kate Hudson was the main attraction at a cocktail party Tuesday evening at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles to celebrate the launch today of her five-piece capsule collection of little black dresses at Ann Taylor. She wore the Best Actress style, a long, asymmetric jersey gown with a high slit. “Obviously the concept was we’re doing an LBD, so how do we do different ones for different occasions?” the actress said. “I just said, ‘Let’s do the different things I would wear them to,’ so for me it was like, ‘What would I want to wear out on a late night partying with my friends?’ [a lace minidress called the Late Nighter] or ‘What would I want to wear that was sort of flirty?’ [a short fit-and-flare called The Romantic] and ‘What would I want to wear on the David Letterman show?’” The last scenario is specific to Hollywood types, but inspired a wearable black sheath with cutout décolletage and leather accents called Camera Ready. The dresses retail from $149 to $198.

“I think girly girls love fashion and that’s why we get inspired to be involved in these things,” she said. Hudson had to tone down some of her more risqué ideas, but she still managed to put her stamp on things. “I wanted to stretch Ann Taylor a bit. I might say, ‘Let’s do a low-slinging back all the way to your tush,’ but the idea is to design for everyone. So I did things like raise hemlines and show some skin while covering all the right parts.”

Hudson will next appear in “Wish I Was Here,” directed by Zach Braff, and is off to Morocco for the first time to shoot “Rock the Kasbah” with Bill Murray. She said she will likely pack a couple of her LBDs in her bag.
