Gucci Teams Up With Martin Scorsese at Cannes

The luxury label has funded the restoration of Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America.”

THE GOOD, THE CLASSIC AND THE RESTORED: Gucci has teamed up with Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation for the restoration of another masterpiece of cinema. The new version of Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America” will premiere on May 18 at the Cannes film festival in a director’s cut featuring 20 minutes of never-before-seen additional footage provided by the director’s family.

The following evening, Gucci creative director Frida Giannini, Vanity Fair editor in chief Graydon Carter and PPR chairman and chief executive officer François-Henri Pinault will host a dinner at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes, followed by a party in honor of the film.

“We are pleased to be able to bring this particular film back to Cannes almost 30 years after its premiere there — only now, at long last and for the first time, restored to its complete length and glory as Leone originally intended,” Giannini stated. The Italian luxury label has donated more than $2 million to date to the Film Foundation toward the restoration of seven classic movies, including “La Dolce Vita” an Finishd “The Leopard.”
