GREEN THUMB: Artist Maurizio Cattelan’s provocative L.O.V.E. statue of a hand with its middle finger raised has irked and amused many in Milan since it was placed in front of the Italian stock exchange in 2011.

Sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, environmental activistsmade their own statement, covering the statue in a green glove, symbol of Greenpeace Italy’s Fashion Duel, a campaign pushing French and Italian luxury companies to commit to zero deforestation and zero discharge of hazardous chemicals throughout their supply chains.

In front of the statue, a group of Greenpeace crusaders in lime green gloves held out a banner that read: “Fashion sells dreams that could become nightmares for the planet.” By Sunday, the glove had been removed.

This wasn’t the group’s first eco attack: at the start of Milan fashion week, Greenpeace draped a glove-shaped green banner over a tower at Milan’s Castello Sforzesco.
