GRADING THE CURATORS: The Qatar Museums Authority and the Fondazione Prada unveiled an international competition Monday aimed at discovering talented new curators.
Called Curate, the contest invites anyone who’s interested — not just aspiring or well-established curators — to dream up an exhibition and propose it to a jury composed of QMA chairwoman H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani; Fondazione Prada president Miuccia Prada; architect Rem Koolhaas; actress and filmmaker Nadine Labaki; Olympic gold medalist Nawal El Moutawakel, and London’s Serpentine Gallery codirector Hans-Ulrich Obrist. Participants can upload their two-minute video proposals to the Curate Web page, and should include a 500-word text explaining their exhibition concepts and listing relevant materials and works.
“The notion of ‘curating’ no longer belongs just to the museum. With the development of digital and social media, it has now become possible for anyone to participate in the selection, editing and communication of ideas,” said a statement from the Curate jury. “We hope that people, whatever their age and background, will make the most of the opportunity offered by Curate to think about the future potential of exhibition making, where there are no imposed boundaries to media, scale, content and formats, and ideas, whether from the fields of science or the arts, can come from anywhere.”
One winner will be selected in spring 2014 from a pool of 20 finalists, whose work will be displayed on the Curate Web site. The deadline to submit proposals is Dec. 31. Participants can compete as individuals or groups.
