GORDON’S PARTY: Plácido Domingo and Frederica von Stade, along with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus, joined a heady group of guests, including Nancy Pelosi and many members of the Getty clan, to celebrate Gordon Getty’s 80th birthday on Monday night in San Francisco. The evening was planned and hosted by Billy and Vanessa Getty.

Gordon Getty, a long-serving member of the Symphony’s board and a lifelong supporter of the orchestra, was also being honored with the world premiere performance of his new composition, “A Prayer for My Daughter,” inspired by a W.B. Yeats poem. “I’m a bit nervous, as any composer would be with the debut of a new piece, but I’m in the hands of an amazing orchestra and conductor, so I’m confident,” said Getty. “In any case, if I see anything amiss, like any other composer I can tweak it later.”

Getty’s wife, Ann, stood by his side, sporting a magnificent large emerald brooch by JAR, a recent gift from Gordon. “Gordon chose it and it was a total surprise,” said Ann, who has a large collection of JAR pieces, several of them in the current Met show.

“I’ve known Gordon for more than 50 years, and I’m so thrilled that Gordon, who is so shy and so generous, is being honored,” said Pelosi, who was accompanied by her husband, Paul, a college friend of Getty’s. “I’m happy that his creativity and artistry are being recognized. Everyone loves Gordon,” added Pelosi, who was heading back to Washington after the event.

Partiers Dede Wilsey, Teddy Getty Gaston, Kamala Harris, Alexander and Tatum Getty, Stephanie Ejabat, Charlotte Shultz, Peter Getty with Shannon Bavaro, Alexis and Trevor Traina, Todd Traina and Denise Hale — who noted that she had also attended Gordon’s 40th birthday party — gathered around to sing “Happy Birthday.”

Proceeds from the Gordon Getty tribute will benefit the Symphony’s music education programs.
