Gloria Gaynor Talks 'Survival'

The disco singer has written a book about how her hit has influenced fans.

SURVIVAL TACTICS: Gloria Gaynor performed one of the late Franco Moschino's signature runway songs “I Am What I Am” during Moschino’s 30th anniversary show Saturday.

And backstage she noted that her 1979 hit, “I Will Survive,” has taken on a life of its own. Its impact has inspired her to do a book about “40 survivor stories from fans around the world,” the singer said backstage before the show.

“These are people who went through traumatic experiences,” she explained, citing as examples a young boy in Africa who watched his younger brother and sister being killed, or a woman who escaped death in Auschwitz. “I had been hearing stories for years.

The book is be released on Dec. 1 with an inspirational CD.  “Even more than the song, what could be more inspirational than a story where one has come out victorious, finding that there is a way out?” Gaynor said.

Asked if she was going to travel to Italy after the performance, Gaynor said with a smile: “I have been to more places here than I care to remember. Since 1975, Italy has been my biggest market.”
