FUR BAN ADVANCES: The West Hollywood City Council voted 3-to-1 on Monday night to move forward with another version of its controversial fur ban. The proposed ban still prohibits the sale of new fur products at the city’s fashion stores, including Balenciaga, Kitson, Alberta Ferretti and Arcade, but excludes used fur products sold by private parties, nonprofit groups and vintage stores.
In the latest iteration of the ban, the definition of fur products comprises any article containing fur found on the body, which covers clothes, belts, hats, shoes, gloves and scarves. The term “fur” broadly applies to animal skins with hair such as mink, shearling, fox, chinchilla, rabbit, mink, seal and bear, but doesn’t apply to leather.
In response to the growing opposition from West Hollywood’s business community, Mayor John Duran ordered an economic study of the ordinance to be conducted before the city council considered it again. The Fur Information Council of America, a fur interest group based in West Hollywood, already commissioned an economic study that revealed 46 percent of apparel retailers in the city sell fur items. Should West Hollywood approve the fur ban, FICA is expected to proceed with a lawsuit to stop the implementation of the ban. If it passes in its current form, the ban will go into effect on Sept. 21, 2013.
