FULL CIRCLE: Thursday Friday, a company that settled a lawsuit with Hermès International in June over the sale of its canvas totes bearing the Birkin bag’s image, told WWD Tuesday that it found knockoffs of its offending bag on eBay’s U.K. site.

Called the Together Bag, Thursday Friday’s tote, which retailed for $65, had become a bestseller since its launch last December. But after the company agreed to stop selling the bag, fakes began popping up all over the Internet, the bulk of which came from Asia, and selling for as much as $400. The object of Thursday Friday’s ire is an India-based eBay vendor who is selling a trio of bags dubbed Together Tote Bags for $39.99.

Not only are counterfeits “not up to Thursday Friday’s quality standards,” but they also infringe on the company’s Together Bag trademark, said creative director Roni Brunn.

The company notified eBay via e-mail Monday night, but it has yet to hear back. Normally, customers are directed to fill out a form and then fax it to the company, but Brunn said the fax number wasn’t working.

“We hope eBay is going to come through for us,” said Brunn, who noted the irony of the situation.

“It’s not new that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” she said. “In this case, imitation is an unintentional form of comedy.…If the bags were better made, we’d buy them, too.”

An eBay spokesman said, “We work with brands around the world through our verified rights owner program to help them manage and monitor trademark concerns. Any rights owner can easily participate in the program, and we will work with Thursday Friday to address any issues with listings.”
