ITALIAN ACCENT: High fashion is about to get another major name. According to industry sources, Gucci’s creative director, Frida Giannini, is working on a debut couture collection. It is understood Gucci does not plan to show its couture on the Paris runway, but sell it on a by-appointment basis and use the couture label to service top celebrities for big red-carpet occasions. Gucci declined comment.
OSCAR’S QUARTET: Oscar de la Renta had a meet-and-greet at Bergdorf Goodman recently to unveil four exclusive wedding gowns for the store. Brides-to-be at Bergdorf’s now have four styles they won’t find anywhere else — including a $13,190 embroidered strapless gown with silk faille underlay. Taking care of brides isn’t all that different than suiting up women with his ready-to-wear, the designer said. “Every single girl wants to look her best that day and she wants to look romantic. This is what my work is all about,” he said.
That can-do attitude also carries over to his approach to the ongoing recession. “In general, I am always optimistic,” he said. “You have to make an effort to look good probably now even more so because things have not turned around as quickly as everybody expected.”
FAMILY DINNER: It’s difficult to get a reservation for two at La Grenouille — let alone one for 30 — but owner Charles Masson made an exception on Friday night when he threw a 25th birthday dinner for his daughter Flavia at the restaurant’s upstairs dining room.
The birthday girl, an actress and comedienne who has performed at Caroline’s Comedy Club, said this was the first time she’d asked her dad for this kind of favor. “I didn’t want it to seem like I was taking advantage of his restaurant before,” she said.
The hostess selected a pink theme for the occasion — decorations included pink balloons and floral arrangements and menu items included (pink) lobster ravioli appetizers and a bombe glacée dessert garnished with pink rose petals. (The birthday girl also donned a peach Marchesa number and pink baubles from her mother Francesca Visconti’s jewelry collection.)
“This isn’t the kind of place where you can have a cowboys-and-Indians theme,” she admitted.
