FREUDIAN KNITS: Designer Bella Freud has launched a capsule collection of wool knitwear for the British brand Barbour, and it’s packed with countryside motifs including falcons, rabbits and a pair of lambs. Freud, who unveiled the collection on Thursday at Soho House in London, said her inspirations ranged from a book on origami to William Nicholson’s illustrations for “The Velveteen Rabbit,” albeit “a slightly Bauhaus version of them,” Freud said. As for the falcon, Freud said, “I’m obsessed with them. I saw the film ‘Kes,’ and it had such a powerful effect on me.”

Freud’s signature knits usually feature phrases, including “Ginsberg Is God,” “Day for Night” and “The Last Poets.” “I call them ‘word sweaters’ she said. “When I choose the words, I like them to be independent of any fixed meaning and quite open to interpretation. I hate the idea of a sweater telling someone what to do like ‘be happy’ as it makes me think, ‘No, I won’t!’”

The Barbour collection will launch in select Barbour stores worldwide from mid-August, and prices range from 89.95 pounds to 129 pounds, or $136 to $196 at current exchange.
