French Luxury Seeks New Talents

Comité Colbert is set to ink a partnership with Paris education officials to attract new blood.

RAISING TALENTS: Faced with a dearth of qualified craftsmen, French purveyors of high-end goods are renewing their partnership with Paris education officials to inform young people about career prospects in the luxury industry.

Michel Bernardaud, president of French luxury trade association Comité Colbert, will ink the new agreement with François Weil, chancellor of the Universities of Paris, in a ceremony at the Arts Décoratifs on Jan. 31.

To mark the occasion, 20 school classes will receive a tour of the “Van Cleef & Arpels — The Art of Fine Jewelry” exhibition, on show at the museum until Feb. 10. A craftsman from the Place Vendôme jeweler and students of the Ecole Boulle applied arts school will be on hand to provide information about training to be a jeweler.

Since the luxury industry and the academic institution joined forces in 2007, some 1,000 students have visited luxury workshops or heard industry representatives in the classroom, Comité Colbert said.
