Forbes Names Uniqlo Tycoon Japan's Richest Man

Fast Retailing chairman and ceo Tadashi Yanai is currently worth $6.1 billion.

IN THE MONEY: Fast Retailing chairman and ceo Tadashi Yanai is now Japan’s richest man, according to the latest wealth ranking by Forbes Asia. The 60-year-old tycoon behind the highly successful Uniqlo chain, is currently worth $6.1 billion. Yanai moved up from his spot at number six last year to beat out 2008’s richest individual: former Nintendo chairman and president Hiroshi Yamauchi, as well as four other executives, including Akira Mori of Mori Trust. Yanai, featured in a cover story in Forbes Asia’s March issue, was one of just a few members from last year’s top 40 who saw their net worth rise in a recessionary year.
