FOR NEW YORK: To try to give local manufacturers a helping hand after Hurricane Sandy, Pratt Center for Community Development has launched the Made in NYC Holiday Shop, an online holiday shop featuring products from 170 local manufacturers who collectively employ more than 3,000 workers.
Many of New York’s Industrial Business Zones — home to the bulk of the city’s manufacturing facilities and factories — were in the storm surge areas. And others outside that range faced challenges. Hanky Panky, a women’s intimates company located in the Garment District, had to halt operations for several days due to lost electrical power. That is one of the labels being sold via the Made in NYC online holiday shop.
“The city’s small manufacturers are critical to a healthy, diverse economy with good jobs for New Yorkers, and to the character and soul of our neighborhoods,” said Adam Friedman, director of the Pratt Center. “By shopping Made in NYC, consumers are helping businesses to finance their new inventory, pay their workers, and restore the local economy,” he added.
