What does it take to be a fashion icon? Monday night guests found out over cocktails at the J. Mendel boutique hosted by the brand and Sevan jewelry in honor of Brooke Shields, whom the invitation dubbed "A One of a Kind Fashion Icon."

"Nice crowd," remarked Gilles Mendel, as he surveyed the mix of editors, Ann Dexter-Jones and Tinsley Mortimer, sipping Champagne and fingering his fall collection.

Shields' "Lipstick Jungle" co-star Lindsay Price brought along her mother, who attended to her drink requests as her daughter kept busy trying on baubles and posing for photographs.

As for Shields herself, she earned her sartorial title: decked out in a J.Mendel cocktail number, the actress had donned towering Fendi sandals, despite the screws in her toes from a recent foot operation. "It's the first I've stood in heels in months," said Shields, whose feet were already visibly swollen. "I couldn't be a fashion icon in flats!"
